Change Readiness Scorecard

Objectively Measure Your Organization's Readiness Before Launching Major Change

By KaVonte Carthron5 min read

Why Assess Before You Launch

Most change initiatives are designed around what needs to change, not whether the organization is ready to change. The gap between those two questions is where most transformation projects fail.

This scorecard gives you an objective baseline of your organization's change readiness before you commit to a launch timeline. Use it to identify risk factors early, shape your communication strategy, and set realistic expectations with sponsors.

Dimension 1: Leadership Alignment

Rate each 1 to 5 (1 = Not at all, 5 = Completely):

• Senior leaders are visibly and actively supporting this change _____
• There is agreement at the leadership level on the why and the what _____
• Leaders are prepared to model the new behaviors being asked of the organization _____
• Conflicting priorities at the leadership level have been identified and addressed _____

Dimension Score: _____ / 20

Dimension 2: Stakeholder Understanding

Rate each 1 to 5:

• Key stakeholders understand why this change is happening _____
• Affected employees have been informed of the change and its impact on them _____
• Communication has addressed the "what's in it for me" question clearly _____
• Feedback channels have been created for stakeholders to raise concerns _____

Dimension Score: _____ / 20

Dimension 3: Organizational Capacity

Rate each 1 to 5:

• The organization has the bandwidth to absorb this change alongside current priorities _____
• Training and support resources are in place for the transition period _____
• The technology and process infrastructure required for the change is ready _____
• Previous change initiatives have been completed before launching this one _____

Dimension Score: _____ / 20

Dimension 4: Cultural Readiness

Rate each 1 to 5:

• The organization has a history of successfully adopting change initiatives _____
• There is a general culture of openness to new ways of working _____
• Trust in leadership is sufficient to carry people through uncertainty _____
• Teams have the psychological resilience to absorb disruption without significant dysfunction _____

Dimension Score: _____ / 20

Scoring Guide and Next Steps

Total Score: _____ / 80

65 to 80: High readiness. Proceed with standard change management practices and maintain momentum.

45 to 64: Moderate readiness. Address gaps in your lowest-scoring dimension before launch or build them into your change plan explicitly.

Below 45: Low readiness. Launching without addressing these gaps significantly increases failure risk. Consider a readiness-building phase before full launch.
